How to Clean a Mirror with Baking Soda (2 Different Ways to Do It!)

You don’t tend to think of baking soda as a go to for cleaning mirrors, but it does a surprisingly great job getting them clean!

There are two ways to clean your mirror with baking soda. The most simple way is to get a sponge lightly wet and sprinkle some baking soda on the sponge. Then, wipe down your mirror and dry with a microfiber cloth.

Below I share the two different ways of cleaning mirrors with baking soda and step by step instructions. If you want a visual, I also have a video demonstration at the end of the article.

OPTION 1

Option 1 is the fastest option, so if you just need to get this mirror cleaned quickly, then I recommend going with this one. If you have more time and want to use baking soda to clean your mirrors on a regular basis, then skip down and see option 2.

All you’ll need for this is a sponge, baking soda and a microfiber cloth.

Step 1 – Wipe Down Mirror with Water

You’ll want to just quickly wipe down your mirror with a damp sponge to get all the loose dirt, toothpaste, or fingerprints off your mirror.

Water actually does a great job on it’s own for getting mirrors pretty clean.

Step 2 – Sprinkle Baking Soda on Sponge

Next, you’ll want to sprinkle just a little bit of baking soda on your sponge.

If you sprinkle too much, then it will start to cake up and make a huge mess. So, better to go light on this and add more if you need to.

Step 3 – Rinse Mirror

Rinse the sponge and squeeze until all the water is out of it.

Then lightly go over the mirror to get any baking soda residue off.

Step 4 – Dry Mirror with Clean Cloth

Use a dry microfiber cloth to finish cleaning your mirror.

You can either use circular motions or start at the top of your mirror and work your way down. If you’re cleaning a full length mirror, it’s much easier to start at the top and work your way down to make sure you get every spec of dirt and lint!

OPTION 2

This is a great way to clean any mirror in your home, but especially those bathroom mirrors that have toothpaste and all sorts of other things stuck to them.

All you’ll need for this is a spray bottle, baking soda, and two microfiber cloths.

Step 1 – Mix Water and Baking Soda Solution

You will need a spray bottle, water, and baking soda. Mix 1 cup of warm water and 1/4 a cup of baking soda in a spray bottle.

Put the lid on and shake really well for a minute or two.

Let it sit for about 10 minutes. The warm water will help the baking soda dissolve.

Shake again for a minute or two and then you’re ready to start cleaning!

Step 2 – Wipe Down Mirror with Water

Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe down your mirror.

If you have a circle shaped mirror, use circular motions and if you have a long mirror, start at the top and work your way down to the bottom of the mirror.

Step 3 – Spray Mirror With Baking Soda Mixture

Lightly spray down your mirror with the spray bottle and let it sit for just a second.

Then, use your microfiber cloth (or paper towel) and start scrubbing down your mirror.

Step 4 – Dry Mirror

Get your second microfiber cloth and dry the mirror using the same circular or top to bottom motions as earlier.

Why Should I Use Baking Soda For Cleaning?

  1. Won’t Scratch Your Mirror – Baking soda is actually a type of salt called sodium bicarbonate. It’s mildly abrasive, so it makes a great cleaner for mirrors that are easily scratched. You probably have it in your pantry because it’s used in baking to help things like muffins and cakes rise.
  2. Safe for Kids and Pets – If you have kids or pets in your home, then this is a cleaner that is safe to use around them. Kids and Pets can be sensitive to certain cleaners and their smells and baking soda is not only safe, but doesn’t have a strong smell either.
  3. Easy to Store – You’ll want to keep your baking soda in a zip lock bag when you’re not using it. It will soak up the odors around it, so make sure you keep it in a sealed bag to keep it fresh.
  4. Stays Fresh for a Long Time – Baking soda doesn’t go bad very quickly if you store it in a sealed container or bag. If you’ve had your baking soda for a while and aren’t sure if it’s still good, then you can do a little test. Pour a small amount of vinegar in a bowl and sprinkle a tiny amount of baking soda on top of it. If there is a reaction and it foams up a little bit, then your baking soda is still good!
