How to Clean a Mirror with Lemon Juice

You might be surprised to find out that you can actually clean your mirrors with lemon juice.

It’s easy peasy, lemon squeezy!

Just mix lemon and water together and pour into a spray bottle. Spray the mixture onto your mirror and then wipe away with a microfiber cloth.

See below for step by step instructions and a video demonstration!

What You Need:

  1. Lemon
  2. Water
  3. Spray Bottle
  4. Microfiber Cloth

Step 1 – Squeeze Lemon Juice

First you’ll want to get a lemon and cut it in half.

Then squeeze the lemon into a bowl. Measure 4 tablespoons out and pour them into a spray bottle.

Pour a cup of water into the spray bottle, put the lid on, and give it a good shake to mix the water and lemon juice.

Step 2 – Spray Mirror

Spray your lemon juice mixture onto your mirror. Make sure it doesn’t drip onto your frame and only stays on the mirror.

Grab your microfiber cloth and start scrubbing! Microfiber cloths are my favorite to use with cleaning mirrors because they don’t leave lint like paper towels do. Check out my article about microfiber cloths HERE.

If you have a round mirror, then you’ll want to scrub down your mirror using circle motions with your microfiber cloth.

If you have a rectangle or square mirror, then you’ll want to wipe down your mirror starting at the top and working your way down.

Pay special attention to the areas on your mirror that are especially dirty so that you can let the acidic nature of the lemon do the hard work!

Step 3 – Wipe Down Mirror with Water

Let the lemon juice sit on the mirror for a few minutes, and then get a clean microfiber cloth slightly damp and wipe down your mirror thoroughly.

Make sure you clean the entire mirror so that there isn’t any lemon juice residue left.

Then get another clean microfiber cloth and dry your mirror to prevent streaks.

Benefits to Using Lemon Juice

Lemon juice has lots of benefits for cleaning!

  1. Smells Good – Lemon scents just make a room smell fresh. There is something about that citrus scent that just makes a room feel clean.
  2. Non-Toxic – You can use this to clean and not worry about your kids or pets. It’s totally safe to use around them!
  3. Easy to Use – Once you get it in the spray bottle with some water, it’s very easy to grab and use as you clean. It takes a little bit of time to get that lemon squeezed into the bottle, but once you have it, then it will last a week if you refrigerate it.
  4. Won’t Scratch Mirror – To clean mirrors you need something that is slightly abrasive, but won’t scratch your mirror.

How Does Lemon Juice Clean Mirrors?

Lemons are made up of 5-8% citric acid, which is why your lips pucker at that tart flavor. It’s so fun to watch kids taste their first lemon and see their funny expressions! All that citric acid though is what makes lemons so great at cleaning surfaces, like mirrors.

Lemon juice is also a natural bleach. It’s not a disinfectant like bleach is, so it wouldn’t really help with cleaning a kitchen that needs stronger cleaners, but the acid in lemons can help areas that need to be cleaned with something that makes it harder for bacteria to thrive. Bathroom mirrors would definitely benefit from that!
